Gurkha’s 20th Anniversary on CigarAficionado.com. Boutique cigar brand Gurkha has been around longer than you might think. In 1989, Kaizad Hansotia, who goes by the knickname Kaiser, discovered the cigar brand while on a trip to Goa, India, for his family’s watch business.

He bought the rights to the struggling brand, which takes its name from the famous Nepalese warriors who fought the British and wielded thick, boomerang-shaped knives, for all of $143, intending to give the cigars as corporate gifts.

It turned into a real business. Hansotia began selling the cigars in the United States in 1995, then later struck a deal to have them made by the Toraños in Honduras. In the meantime, the Gurkha brand has become distinctive for its stunning and unique packaging, and also some of its eye-popping prices—the company charges up to $750 for a single cigar.

Today, Hansotia is celebrating his 20 years of Gurkha with the release of the Gurkha Archive. A (relatively) modest price offering for a Gurkha at around $10 per cigar.

“It took two whole years to edit the Archive 1887 to perfection because I wanted to personally ensure that this limited-edition cigar was the ideal representation of the Gurkha brand for its 20th Anniversary,” said Hansotia. “I believe we’ve achieved that goal.”

The Archive comes in a stately, heavy wooden chest. There are three sizes available: the Toro measures 6 inches long by 50 ring gauge; the Churchill is 7 1/2 by 50 and the Torpedo is 6 1/2 by 52.

Each box holds 92 cigars, a very unusual size for the cigar industry. The reason? That’s how many fit in the box. “We made the box first, and whatever fits is good,” said Hansotia. His Florida company, called Beach Cigar Group, is limiting the release to 1,000 boxes.

The cigar is made with a pair of Cameroon binder leaves, Nicaraguan filler tobacco and a maduro broadleaf wrapper grown in Connecticut. They are rolled in Honduras.
